Franco Brevini taught Italian Literature and Modern and Contemporary Italian Literature at the University of Bergamo and the IULM University in Milan. One of the leading scholars of dialect poetry (La poesia in dialetto. Storia e testi dalle origini al Novecento, 1999, 3 vols.), his most recent publications include Voci di Lombardia (2008) and La letteratura degli italiani. Why Many Celebrate It and Few Love It (2011).
His passion for mountaineering fuels another strand of his work, from Ghiacci. Uomini e avventure dalle Alpi al Grande Nord (2002) and Rocce. Dal Borneo alle Lofoten, dalle Alpi al Sahara, avventure di uomini in scalata (2004) to La sfinge dei ghiacci. The Italians Discovering the Far North (2011).
He published A Match in the Dark: How Culture Survives Barbarians and Anti-Barbarians (2008) with Bollati Boringhieri, and The Book of Snow: Adventures, Stories, Imagination (2019) and The Conquest of Distance: Journeys, Encounters, Discoveries (2024) with Il Mulino.
He is a contributor to the *Corriere della Sera*.
